By spending 1 Strain and making a successful Unarmed Combat Test against a physical Attack Test targeting the adept, the adept not only prevents the targeted attack from succeeding, but also allows the adept to take a free Unarmed Combat action against the attacker, with a Step bonus to any tests involved equal to the Success Level of the Reversal Test. Additionally, if the Reversal Test results in an Excellent Success, the adept may choose to have successfully Grappled the opponent prior to the free Unarmed Combat action. The adept must choose whether to attempt the Reversal prior to the opponent's Attack Test, and failure on the Reversal Test adds one Level of Success to the opponent's Attack Test (essentially guaranteeing at least a free hit).
